How to check your Claude usage and limits

Where to see your Claude usage — Settings > Usage, the /usage command in Claude Code, and a widget — plus how the 5-hour and weekly limits reset.

Checking your Claude usage comes down to two questions: how much of my limit is left, and when does it come back? On Pro and Max plans, Claude counts your usage against a 5-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and either one can stop you in the middle of a task. Here is where to find both numbers, and how to keep them in view.

The quick answer: on the web or in Claude Desktop, open Settings > Usage. In Claude Code, type /usage. To see it without opening either, put Claude on your iPhone Home Screen or Mac menu bar with Nowdex.

What the Claude usage limits are

Limit What it means
5-hour session A short window that resets every five hours. Hitting it means waiting a few hours.
Weekly limit The bigger budget across all models. It resets at a fixed time each week that is set for your account.
Fable share On Max and Team premium seats, up to half of your weekly limit can go to Fable models. It is part of the weekly limit, not extra.
Reset time When each limit comes back. The session and weekly limits each have their own.

One thing catches people out: claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code all draw from the same limits. A long Claude Code session in the morning leaves less for chat in the afternoon, and the other way round.

1. On the web or desktop: Settings > Usage

Open claude.ai/settings/usage, or go to Settings > Usage in Claude Desktop. It shows how much of the current session and the week you have used, and when each one resets. It is also where you turn on usage credits and set a monthly spend limit for them.

It is the most complete view, but it is a settings page behind a sign-in. On a phone, that is several taps for two numbers.

2. In the terminal: /usage in Claude Code

In a Claude Code session, type /usage. On a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan it shows your plan’s usage limits and what has counted against them, along with the cost and activity of the current session. /cost and /stats open the same screen.

Note that /status is a different command: it shows your version, model, and account, not your limits.

3. At a glance: Claude on your iPhone and Mac

Nowdex reads the same limits from your Claude account and keeps them where you already look:

  • iPhone and iPad widgets show the weekly limit and the 5-hour session, each with its reset time. On plans with a Fable share, the widget also shows how much of it is left.
  • The Mac menu bar shows up to two numbers, with every window one click away.
  • The Status screen lists every connected account, so Claude sits next to Codex, Cursor, and the rest.

You connect your Claude account once; there is no Nowdex account to create. The free version covers one account, which is enough for Claude alone. Setup is in how to see your remaining usage on iPhone.

Reading the numbers

  • Used or left? The Home Screen widget shows how much you have used; the Mac menu bar shows how much is left. 64% used is 36% left, so check the label first.
  • Which reset matters. A countdown like 4h 30m belongs to the 5-hour session. A day and time like 3d 18:30 is the weekly reset. If the weekly limit is nearly gone, waiting out the session will not help much.
  • The Fable share is inside the week. “Fable 60% left” means you can still spend that much of your Fable share, but it still counts against the weekly limit.

When you are about to hit the Claude usage limit

  1. Check which limit is low. If it is only the session, a short break may be enough.
  2. Use a limit reset if Claude has offered you one. Depending on the offer, it refills the session or the weekly limit once.
  3. Turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage to keep working at API rates after the limit. Set a monthly spend limit so there are no surprises.
  4. Switch agents. If Codex or Cursor has room, start the next task there. Checking all your AI limits in one place makes that call quick; for Codex, see how to check your Codex usage.

What is not your Claude plan usage

  • The Claude Console at platform.claude.com tracks API-key billing. That is pay-as-you-go and separate from your Pro or Max limits.
  • Token counters such as ccusage read Claude Code’s local logs and add up tokens and estimated cost. That tells you what you spent, not how much of your plan is left. Nowdex shows both, separately: limits on the Status screen, and tokens and cost by agent and model on the Usage tab, powered by tokens.ci.

FAQ

How do I check my Claude usage?

Open Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop, or type /usage in Claude Code. To check from your phone or Mac without opening either, use a Nowdex widget or the menu bar.

When does the Claude usage limit reset?

The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets once a week, at a fixed day and time assigned to your account; it does not depend on when you subscribed. Settings > Usage and Nowdex both show the exact reset time.

Does Claude Code use the same limit as claude.ai?

Yes. On Pro and Max plans, Claude Code, claude.ai, and Claude Desktop all count toward the same session and weekly limits.

Can I see my Claude usage on my iPhone?

Yes. Add a Nowdex widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen to see your remaining Claude usage and reset times without opening anything.
